Hypocrisy, Lies, Nuclear Arms, and National Security
Once again the right-wing in this country puts their out of control hypocrisy on display for the entire world to see, but once again, no one is watching…
After months of negotiations with Dimitry Medvedev, the White House is on the verge of ratifying a much needed nuclear arms treaty with Russia. This treaty would, among other things, reduce the number of nuclear warheads between the two countries from 2,200 to 1,500. This is certainly a modest reduction, but it is a forward step in the right direction towards reducing the threat of nuclear weapons falling into the wrong hands just a tad bit more. More importantly, the treaty would also restore inspections and other exchanges of intelligence regarding the U.S. and Russian nuclear arsenals. Even more importantly, as the New York Times pointed out in a recent editorial piece, the treaty would make significant progress towards rallying many other countries, including Russia, to press the Iranian government to curb their “illicit” nuclear program.
Even the Republican Party can’t be stupid enough to stop the ratification of this treaty, right? This treaty is certainly a no brainer right? It is according to the White House, the Democrats in the Senate, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, all of the country’s top military leaders, six former secretaries of state (including the Republican golden boy Ronald Regan’s former secretary of state George Shultz), five former secretaries of defense, seven former nuclear weapons commanders, almost every op-ed page in the country, and the Senate’s leading expert on arms control, Richard Lugar (who I might add is a Republican). So who could possibly be against this no brainer treaty that seemingly the whole world is in favor of, this treaty that would certainly help make this country a safer place from the threat of another terrorist attack. You guessed it, the know nothings themselves, the Republican Party, led by the idiot Senator from Arizona John Kyl.
Anyone who pays even the slightest attention to international relations and world politics knows that this nuclear arms treaty between the United States and Russia is a good thing for the entire international community, everyone except the majority of the Republican Party. Why are the Republicans so hell bent on stopping this treaty from getting ratified in the Senate? For no other reason than to see President Obama fail! For the next two years, the Republicans are determined to stop any bill that the President is in favor of from passing, whether it’s detrimental to the country and the American people or not. How do I know this? Because the orange tan man himself John Boehner told us so. As he recently pointed out in a speech, John Boehner along with the new Republican majority in the House are using all their strength and votes to stop President Obama from getting anything passed, they are going to act as the party of obstruction. Once again, the Republican Party has put partisan politics above the welfare of this country and its citizens. The Republican Party, who for years has tried to position themselves as the party of national security, is willing to put the security of the country in jeopardy for political gain, and yet again voters in this country put this party back into office.
I try to not be so cynical, but the voters of this country have once again proved themselves to be either complete morons or blissfully ignorant when it comes to what’s going on in other parts of the world. If a terrorist organization finally gets its hands on a nuclear weapon and sets one off somewhere in this country, the voters will have no one to blame but themselves. We sit on our couches and complain about how bad things are and how the people in office don’t know what they’re doing, but we refuse to do anything about it. We would rather watch Bristol Palin on Dancing with the Stars than give a shit about what’s happening in our own backyard. We don’t notice the blatant hypocrisy that’s right in front of our faces when a new GOP elected congressman who ran on an anti “Obamacare” platform demands to know why his government-subsidized health care takes 28 days after being sworn into office to kick in.
In four weeks my wife and I are moving to Canada, Montreal to be exact, and the move couldn’t come any sooner.
